Tianjin is the main port for Beijing and northern China, about 120 km south-east of the capital on the Bohai Sea. Its Binhai New Area includes the Xingang terminals, a free trade zone and large industrial parks.
Practical tips. Choose Tianjin for consignees in Tianjin and Hebei; for Beijing the tariff also lists a Beijing destination, which includes the inland leg. The tariff shows Tianjin and Xingang separately: Xingang is Tianjin's port district, so compare both rates. Personal effects are cleared only for residents with a work or residence permit.
Tianjin also has a large foreign community in its free trade zone and around its universities. Plan around Chinese New Year, when transport stops for up to two weeks.
The city is a short high-speed train ride from Beijing.
